The Schlep Sisters are burlesque performers of the Jewish persuasion! Minnie Tonka and Darlinda Just Darlinda are long lost sisters that found each other while tracing the roots of Yiddish Theater and Vaudeville. Inspired by the Barry Sisters and Rock n' Roll these ladies can cut a rug!They've been livin' it up on stage together since 2003. Summer was MAGNIFICENT, I just returned from Barcelona, with new friends and new ideas! This month is full of exciting events including The Jackie Factory's 3rd Annual Low Life: Viper Mad(9/6), live music and Burlesque with my favorite band Not Waving but Drowning(9/18), and the first ever Burlesque Disco Dance Party(9/19)at the NEW Beauty Bar! Once upon a time a young girl stumbled upon a fascinating theory: the monster/beauty continuum. She gets swept away by the concept and literally lands in a fantasy land called Phantasmagoria. Phantasmagoria is a land where all of the beauties are monsters and all of the monsters are beauties. She meets Dr. Lucky, the Patron Saint of Glamour, and all of the creatures of Phantasmagoria who each teach the young girl a thing or two about the beauty in monsters and the monstrosity of beauty. Through their lessons, our young girl emerges a woman who realizes that this fantasy land can in fact be a reality.
Come join a star-studded cast as our performers bring to life Dr. Lucky’s essay entitled, "'It is the Ugly that is so Beautiful': Performing the Monster/Beauty Continuum in Neo Burlesque." Starring some of the most compelling monsters/beauties in the new burlesque scene including Bambi the Mermaid, Bunny Love, Darlinda Just Darlinda, Devilicia, Dr. Lucky and Little Brooklyn. Once upon a time an unsuspecting academic researching a vital 21st century cultural phenomenon gets swept away by her studies and literally lands in a fantasy land called Phantasmagoria. In Phantasmagoria, all of the beauties are monsters and all of the monsters are beauties. Though monster/beauty produces conceptual richness, it also creates curatorial nightmares as Dr. Lucky and Darlinda Just Darlinda attempt, in vain, to structure the show. Along the way, they meet some of the most compelling beautiful monsters and monstrous beauties in the new burlesque scene including Bambi the Mermaid, Darlinda Just Darlinda, Devilicia, Dr. Lucky and Little Brooklyn. I'm headed out of town for two weeks! Yay! This means the Darlinda sightings are minimal in August! So come to the Leo Show on July 30th to see me off to Spain!!
August is all about FUN!! I'll be hosting Kitty Nights on August 2nd, teaching Flirting with Burlesque on August 6th, performing with World Famous *BOB* and Dirty Martini in Hip Hip Hooray a tribute to everything Gay at Coney Island on August 7th and when I return I'm co producing PHANTASMAGORIA with Dr Lucky where the Monsters are Beauties and the Beauties are Monsters!!
